Wild Bird Trust photographers of the week

I have one picture chosen by Wild Bird Trust in this week’s edition of Top 25 Wild Photographs of the week. It is a picture from my first trip to Australia and it is taken on the outskirt of Lakes Entrance, a tourist resort and fishing port in Victoria.

The picture is of a Rainbow Lorikeet that lived around the cottage where we stayed, Kalimna Woods Cottage Rainforest Retreat. The wild birds lived in the forest around the retreat and the couple that ran the retreat feed them each morning giving me ample opportunity to capture intimate pictures of this lovely parrot. They are a medium sized parrot and it is hard to visually distinguish the sexes, but it is easy to separate the adults and juveniles as the juveniles have a black beak.

With that in mind you can tell that my photo is of an adult as the beak is bright orange.

It is a close-up of a Rainbow Lorikeet. I think it is an intimate and lovely portrait of this colorful parrot. I was really happy to be able to work with them each morning before we went out sightseeing around the Victoria area. We also saw other species of parrots around Lakes Entrance like the Little Corella, King Parrot, Crimson Rosella and Galah. It was a lovely place and one I would like to explore more another time.

I love the details of the bird in this picture. I have seen a couple of colorful birds before, but this is probably on top of my list. I treasured the time I could spend with them and it was lovely to see the couples sitting close preening each other creating a stronger bond between them.
