Thamalakane River Lodge was choosen as the starting point of our adventure in Botswana. It is situated nicely along the Thamalakane River just outside of Maun. It is considered to be one of the best lodges around Maun sporting a really nice kitchen.
Thamalakane River Lodge, the best lodge in Maun they say
Thamalakane River Lodge was the starting point for my adventure in Botswana.
I´ve been arranging trips for my nearest friends the last couple of years. We´d decided in 2009, after a trip to South Africa, that we wanted to see more of Africa. I did some extensive investigations before the plan was approved. Botswana was our next destination.
One thing that we have learned during our trips is that one shouldn´t hurry. That will just make you stressed so for this trip I decided that we at least should have one night’s good sleep before we started any adventures. I choose Thamalakane River Lodge because of two things, the food and the location. The food should be the best around Maun. I can´t tell you if this is true. What I can say is that the food was ok. Far from the the worst.
A nice place along the river
The location along the Thamalakane River was truly spectacular. One really marveled at the first sunset. One just sat in the restaurant during dinner hearing how the Bell frog choir tuned in and how the Hippos started to grunt further out. A real treat for a weary soul.
The standard of the rooms was alright even if mine was overrun by Spiders. I normally don´t enjoy their company, but at least one had mosquito hunters that would protect us during sleep. The swimming pool was a disappointed to me. I thought they had a decent pool when I looked at the ads, but it was just a splash pool. Nothing to write home about.
Little Egret landing at Thamalakane River Lodge
There were many different birds in the compound and many more flew past on their way to their feeding grounds. We found a Yellow-billed Kite nest in the compound and also a resident slender mongoose. Sometimes goats entered the compound to go down to the river to drink, but they were most often chased away by the staff.
Read about Zakouma National Park and look at some of the photos I took during my six day stay there in March 2019. Zakouma National Park is an refuge for many species in the Salamat region of Chad. A place that might remind us how Africa once looked when animals freely could roam the continent.
Mana Pools National Park 2018
I went bush camping in Mana Pools in October 2018. It gave me a new insight into what he bush can bring you even at a famous place like Mana Pools in northern Zimbabwe.
The Zambezi River 2018
The Zambezi river is one of the finest and least spoiled rivers in the world. The basin has some of Africa's finest national parks, and many valuable species, ecosystems and wilderness areas survive thanks to the Zambezi river.
Hungary Bee-eater Bonanza 2018
This is my photo album from the Hungarian Bee-eater Bonanza workshop in June 2018. 7 days of photography gave us plenty of good opportunities to work with the animals of the Puszta.
