A weeks vacation in Italy
The last couple of years have meant that I´ve visited Italy at least once each year. It has either been work related or just plain vacation. I still haven´t visited the south of Italy but those days will surely come.
I love the food, wine and the hospitality that you get from the people that you meet. Everyone has been really helpful even if they don´t know a word of English.
Last year’s vacation was in Tuscany but this year I was back at Fratelli Revellos place in Piedmont. I really like Piedmont and the area there. Piedmont for me is more of a concentrated wine region than what you find in Tuscany. The wine makers are friendly and give you tips where to go and what wine to test. This is for me the biggest difference between Piedmont and Tuscany. Piedmont seems to be a region where everyone cares for the other even if they are rivals in the market.
Then you also have the wonderful landscape that is so hard not to like.
Fratelli Revello where we stay is a wine producing family in La Morra that makes really good Barolos. I have a few in my shelves that are waiting to mature. They also make a good Barbera and a Dolcetto that I enjoy. The Barbera was unfortunately sold out so I just took a bottle of Barolo back home this time. Instead I visited Gianfranco Alessandria were I bought their star Vittoria, a Barbera of the highest caliber. Their Barolos is also really good and I would say that they are made in the more traditional way with more tannin than the ones from Revello.
I wouldn´t say that any of these two wine makers are better than the other because they are really good both of them. They only help I give you are this. Visit both and make up your own mind.
I can only tell you my own personal opinion. I can´t say that you will like the same wine as I do because we have different tasting palettes. It will be your experience and not mine but I truly think you will find something that you´ll like at both Revello and Alessandria in Piedmont.
