Spending Eastern in Skåne
I have now been back from my Eastern trip to Skåne a couple of days. The last days was spent working and I spent to many kilometers in the car for my own best.
The days around Fyledalen was really good. I had hoped for spring but the cold weather made the Buzzard’s come to the bait and that gave me a nice opportunity to get interaction photos of the Buzzard’s. I made a small detour when I left for Fyledalen for Maglarp to see what Vombs wet meadow could bring. The area were buzzing with birds of prey, mostly Red Kite’s and Rough-legged Buzzard’s, but the migratory birds weren´t there.
I spent time at Vombs wet meadow taking photos of the resident White Stork couple. My hope was to see them catch a mice or frog but that wasn´t to be. Still it was nice to see these regal birds here in Sweden and hopefully they will continue to populate their old nesting grounds.
The landscape turned more into farming land as I came nearer Maglarp. That meant I could sit and watch the Common Pheasant’s out in the open fields. It seemed like they were squabbling over territory so they put up a nice show for me a particular evening.
What I like most in this picture is the golden light. It really enhanced the coloration of the Pheasant that made it radiate in a way. Not the most interesting photo but still a nice portrait.
In Maglarp I got Internet connection so I checked the Swedish birding site Svalan and to my joy I found out that there should be a Northern Hawk-Owl just couple of kilometers north of where I stayed. This was of course something I had to check out.
We had a Northern Hawk-Owl that visited the Gothenburg area during autumn but I couldn´t get a out to photo that Owl. The reports that I read about the Owl in Skåne made me hope I could get a couple of photos of decent quality. It stayed in a recreational area where people exercised so it was definitely used to human presence. I found some nice maps of the area and could locate exactly where the Owl had been seen.
I did found it and got my desired photos. I had the fortune to watch the Owl hunt twice and I think it actually nicked a mice the first time. The second time it went after a Tit but the small bird was much too fast.
This picture is just after the first hunt just before it flew up into the trees again. It was really a pleasure to spend time with the Owl even if it sat still for long periods. It was a nice ending to my Eastern trip to the south of Sweden.
