Wild Bird Trust photographers of the week

One of my pictures was chosen by Steve Boyes of Wild Bird Trust to feature in their Top Wild Bird Photographs of the Week. It is always a great pleasure to be chosen to feature on National Geographic’s News Watch and this time it is a photograph from my last visit to Hungary in February.

I went to Hungary with three things in mind and that was Eagles, Owls and Kingfisher. I came home with pictures of all three together and some of the Owl pictures where really good I think.

Now it’s a picture of a Great Spotted Woodpecker that got selected.

It is a normal portrait of the Great Spotted Woodpecker, the most common Woodpecker here in the north. The picture is nice with the Woodpecker sitting upright on a sloping log. This is probably the only thing that is a little out of the ordinary with this Woodpecker portrait. I think this is a nice picture but I have more interesting photos of the species from my visit to Kalvträsk.

The picture is taken in the garden at the house where I stayed during my trip to Hungary in the summer of 2012. Zoltan have a photo hide in the garden with a bird bath and during the winter he adds a feeder station. That is where this photo was taken. I think it is nice to see how easy it actually is to do something where you live. Zoltan use ordinary glass in his hides and it works even if you lose around one step in Aperture. Of course you have to keep the windows clean but you also get to see the whole scene in front of you and you can pan without disturbing the birds.
