The end of the Red deer rutting season is here

The end is here. At least the end of the Red deer rutting season for me. It has brought me to three different countries in the search of a good Red deer rutting pictures. At first I visited Hungary and the Gemenc area before heading back to Scandinavia where I search for Red deer both in Sweden and Denmark.

I have been successful in finding Red deer most of the time except in Gemenc. We did hear them there, but I never saw an adult just a young stag once. I actually thought Gemenc would be easy, but it surely prepared me for the coming challenge.

So how did it end? Well it ended on a low. I went out Saturday evening together with my friend Martin. We didn’t find the stag where he used to be, only a couple of females together with Fallow deer males. Instead, I saw him on the way to our meeting point. Sadly that place is impossible to approach so it was no point trying as one just would have scared them.

Still the females gave me a small hope for Sunday, but sadly I was too tired to wake up in the morning. But, me and Maria took the detour over the deer territory on the way home in the late afternoon. At first we just saw the Fallow deer and Red deer females. I thought that was it the season has ended until we passed over a small crest.

There he stood out in the field giving me the possibility to end the rutting season on a high.

I am still a little mad as I got pushy and didn’t think properly. I could have taken better pictures then the two I show here as he actually walked straight out in the sunset. Those pictures would have been great to get. What I am saying is that even an experienced photographer like myself sometimes turns out to be completely clueless.

Still it might be good that I messed up in this way.

I say so because I will be heading south at the end of the week with hope of getting a couple of nice pictures of both landscape, waterfalls and animals. By south I mean Africa and this time to completely new places.

Maria will join me on her first journey to Africa, hopefully not last. We will visit both northern South Africa and southern Botswana to see this arid region and its landscape and animals. On the way back to Johannesburg we will travel along the Panorama route.

I do hope we will enjoy what’s on offer.
