Okavango Delta – the largest inland delta
If I would recommend anyone a place to visit in Africa then I would say they should visit the Okavango Delta in Botswana. It is a place that really leaves a mark on your soul.
Just to find a place so alive in the middle of the Kalahari Desert is amazing.
The Okavango Delta is dependent upon the water that flows from the highlands in Angola thorough the Okavango River into the Kalahari and endorheic basin that is the Okavango Delta.

The flood peaks during winter which is between June and August and this is the main season for the safari industry in Botswana.
I went there in October last year and there was good amount of water in the delta as the floodings had been huge during the year. This made it difficult to see anything while sitting in the mokoro as you can see in my video from the trip.

Still I would recommend all to do a day trip with a mokoro. Just to sit there listening to the splash made from the pole as the poler pushes the canoe thorough the water was really relaxing.
I had hoped to see some mammals from the canoe, but there was none to see while seated in the canoe. Once we got onto an island and did a game walk we encounter both Warthog’s and Red Lechwe’s.
Next time I visit the Okavango Delta I would like to go from the Panhandle in the north-western part of the Okavango Delta to Maun in the south-eastern part by boat.

A flat-bottomed boat like the one we use getting out to the Mokoro station at the Buffalo fence in this video would be the main vessel, but I would also like to have a mokoro so one could get thorough the thicker reed beds to reach more remote islands. Maybe one should stay a couple of nights at different lodges, but I would prefer to stay in a tent to really get close to nature.
And don´t forget to get airborne when you go there. A scenic flight over the Delta is magnificent, but noisy so don´t forget to bring ear plugs and maybe air sickness pills. It is better to be safe than sorry so you truly can appreciate the experience.

Next time I would love to try a helicopter to have a more stable plattform for my photography.
