Kalvträsk in winter will bring a different feeling to the pictures compared to a trip in autumn. If one is lucky there might be several Eagle on site at the same time with the possibility of interaction.
winter in kalvträsk
I went back to Kalvträsk in the middle of January. The reason was twofolded. Interaction between Golden Eagles and Northern Lights. January is a good month for both reasons, with long nights and a breeding season that hasn’t started yet. This time I only went for three night due to the booking situation.
The first day was a dull one with no Golden Eagle in front of the hide. Had a gang of Red squirrels that kept us company at the start of the day, but nothing else to write home about. Not the most productive start, but still a few pictures to look at when we got back to the house.

the second day at the eagle hide
Next day was much more productive. Sometimes a change in weather can be positive. Heavy snowfall might have triggered the urge for one male Golden Eagle to come to the site. It was hungry and stayed for over an hour which gave me opportunity to photo.
Not the best light, but at least stable so you could work without to much to think about when it comes to shutter speed and so forth. The heavy snowfall stopped during shortly before midday, but the sky never cleared up. So, overall a dull day when it comes to sunshine but a good day for photography.

The Last day
The habitat the last day was gorgeous. The landscape had turned into a winter wonderland due to the snowfall the previous day, and night. The conditions was pristine and the male Golden Eagle were back.
This time it mad two appearances and the last was during the golden hour which made for a soft yellow sky in the distance. The activity overall was good this day and you had opportunities to work with other species as well.

During the evening we also witnessed a short period of Northern Lights. Sadly, a new front was coming in so we just had a short window of opportunity. Still, got my first picture of Northern Lights. A feeble attempt, but still a picture or two to show.
