Sights set on Gemenc

Gemenc forest is the goal for the last photo workshop this year. Many have never heard about the Gemenc forest and me included until a couple of years ago. I got enlighten when I watched a TV show about the forests in southern Hungary and specially the Gemenc forest that flood each year

The Gemenc forest is situated in Danube-Drava National Park within the Danube and Drava flood land areas in the south west of Hungary. A big part of this national park are Ramsar wetlands where you can find a good population of Black Storks and White-tailed Eagle. The biggest attraction is probably the Red Deer stags with their impressive antlers and that is the reason I will travel there this weekend. They also have a good population of Wild Boar as well as the beautiful Freyer’s Purple Emperor, a butterfly we don’t have back in Sweden.

On the interesting side is that this will be the first proper photo workshop in Gemenc. The Gemenc area is mainly a hunting area, but I think they understand that photography could become good business for them. I feel privileged to be part of this first try and that is one of the reasons why I have cheated at home with practice sessions.

A last try before Gemenc

My latest session was this weekend when I and an old friend, Martin Öst, search for Red deer together. Sadly we didn’t find any Red deer, but found plenty of Fallow deer and a nice sized Wild boar family. This means the mission of finding the Red deer still is on, but also that we found a couple of spots with good potential for both deer and boar.

I will continue to search for Red deer in the area as soon as I get back from Gemenc. I will find them that is sure.

Fully kitted for deer photography

The last gear has arrived so I feel properly kitted for this trip. Mammals are not the easiest subject and that is why camouflage is important. I have purchased new gloves, insect net, a ghillie parka and camouflage clothing that I will use in Gemenc, but also back home.

This will be fun to say the least and I hope my clients will come back with some really nice pictures. I will bring my 70-200mm lens this time as I think that might come in handy with its low light capability.
