The Golden Eagle of Kalvträsk 2012

The Golden Eagle is one of my favorites among the Eagles. In Kalvträsk you have one of the best spot in the world to photo this beautiful Eagle at Conny Lundströms place. I can highly recommend a visit there as it will give you memories for life.

My days in Kalvträsk with the Golden Eagle pair

This is just a few of my pictures from the Golden Eagle workshop at Conny Lundström‘s place in Kalvträsk. I will not go into any lengths about the photos as they more or less speak for themselves.

I went there with the knowledge that I would have a good chance of taking photos of a Golden Eagle. Conny had a guarantee which means if you don´t see any Golden Eagles for three days then you’re welcome back for a reduced fee. That is something extraordinary in my opinion. Conny has worked with this male Eagle for almost 13 years so he know a thing or two about its behavior. This Eagle is most times relaxed even when he hear the shutter going from a camera. The same can’t be said about the resident female.

The days in Kalvträsk

My hope prior to the trip was to get photos of Eagle interaction. That wasn´t to be this time. Still I got some good photos and a couple of them have already been on show at National Geographic’s News Watch.

The mix of birds at the place wasn´t great, but still I could take photos during the whole day. I think many of the photos are of a high quality. Still I see that I need to work on the techniques I use when shooting in low light conditions. I would have benefited if I had used a remote. A raised mirror would also have helped, but I have never worked with that before. Both would have meant less vibrations and better sharpness in the photo.

It is always good to challenge yourself and shoot in low light because then you have to work and think before you actually take the pictures. It is not easy to get what you want in those conditions and most often the pictures end up in the bin. But those photos that turns out good are often something special.
