“The Bee-eater Bonanza is a tour for the avid bird photographer who want the possibility to take photos of the colorful birds of Hungary. The tour will take you to the Great Hungarian Plain a habitat suited to many different type of animals.”
The Hungary Summer Tour will take you to the Great Hungarian Plain, the Puszta, where we will have seven days of intense bird photography. A few of our target species will be the European Bee-eater, European Roller and Eurasian Hoopoe. We will get ample opportunities to photo different species in different habitats like steppe, forest and marsh.
We will meet up at the airport in Budapest where we will be picked up by our guide who will drive us to the accommodation in Kisújszállás, approximately a two hours drive. At the accommodation we will unload before we head to a local supermarket to buy food for the coming days. We will have photo activities both in the morning and afternoon.
The accommodation is a newly build lodge with swimming pool. It has a garden full of flowers and plants that attract insects. It is easy to spend the midday in the garden trying to work with everything from butterflies to bees.
The normal Bee-eater bonanza day starts early with a light breakfast at the lodge. Pick-up is rarely later than 4:30 am, more often earlier as we chase the best light. A morning session usually ends at the latest 10 am, but it depends upon the light, heat and if the activity still is good in front of the hide. It is flexible in every aspect.
You will have a packed lunch and water at your disposal during the morning session.
Back at the lodge we pre-order lunch that will be eaten at the local restaurant. We often eat lunch at 3 pm which means you have a couple of hours at the lodge at your own disposal. It can be spent looking through the material from the morning, hunting insects in the garden or taking a power nap. The last is recommended for an hour or two as the days are long.
Shortly after lunch we head out for the afternoon session which normally is shorter, 2-3 hours.
I recommend that you hit the sack at the latest 10 pm to get at least 5 hour of sleep.
The Bee-eater bonanza will take its toll on your sleep. That is why I feel the power-naps is essential to keep your energy level.
