The annual bike ride to Jonsered
I took my bike to Jonsered on Saturday two weeks ago. Jonsered is the start of the last leg of Säveåns way towards Göta Kanal and the sea.
I also did this trip the last year so I know what I could expect. My main concern was to see if I could find the Goosander with chicks or if I could discover some other young birds.
This time I actually did the small pre tour early in the morning to see if I could find anything of interest. The weather was great and there where much life all around. I soon found a Great Tit jumping around in a big tree. My capture of this isn´t the best but it is nice to be able to document this behavior and see that they doesn´t always flap their wings.
It was also nice to see the Mallard Duck family and how the chicks hunted insects just above water’s edge. A European Robin family was also found with the young one begging for food all the time. The Blue Tit and Chaffinch picture was also taken during this small pre tour.
Later in the afternoon, after having a lunch with Maria, I took off with Jonsered as destination. I knew a Red-breasted Flycatcher was sighted there during Friday so I was also thinking of searching for it. During the pre tour in the morning I decided that I shouldn´t stop for anything that I hadn´t seen before this year. So I actually just had one stop on the way and that was because I longed for some water. The sun was blazing and most animals, and birds, were sticking to the shade. This is why Jonsered is such a nice place to come to this time of year. There is always something here because much of Säveån lies in shade.
Once there I mostly found what I had expected. It was really nice to see the young Goldeneye and how the mother cased the Ducks that came to near. I followed the mother and chick for a time to see if I could capture some interesting behavior but they were just searching for food.
Instead I headed in the direction of the Flycatcher but I couldn´t find it due to my lack of knowledge of both the bird and the area in which it had been seen. Therefore I headed back home. Now I took time and stopped once in a while. I was pleased to find a Greenfinch but also to see the Mallard Duck family again. This time I got some nice pictures of them that can be seen in the gallery so please enjoy the pictures.
